DAISY award recipient Samantha Chin with her nursing unit

On February 1, 2023, Samantha Chin’s dedication to the nursing profession was celebrated among her colleagues and members of the Senior Leadership Team when she was recognized with a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. As part of the DAISY tradition, Samantha received a bouquet of daisies, A Healer’s Touch statuette, and a platter of cinnamon buns to share with her unit.

Samantha has been a nurse at South County Hospital since 2017. A graduate of URI, she began her career on Frost 3 on the surgical night shift, however, quickly realized she had a calling for the Women and Newborn Care Unit (WNCU). “What I love most about the WNCU are my new moms with their transition to parenthood,” says Samantha.

In her nomination, the patient praised Samantha’s kindness, professionalism and willingness to go the “extra mile” in staying well past her shift to help ease any concerns prior to her C-section.

“We had Samantha as our nurse on 10/16/2020, the day our daughter was born, but I only just found this page to nominate a nurse today. Samantha is hands down the best nurse and healthcare provider I have ever had. I could go on and on about how friendly and caring she was, you could just tell that she loved her job and loved taking care of mamas and babies. She was with us all day, answering every question, holding my hand, explaining everything to my husband and I, until we went in for our C-section; she even stayed with me past the end of her shift to make sure I was okay going in for surgery because she knew I was scared. She explained everything in terms we understood, made sure we had everything we could ever need and we had some great conversations. Which, Samantha, if you’re reading this, you better have watched Jumanji by now. We are expecting our second baby, and I pray that we have Samantha as our nurse again!

Even though that particular experience was more than two years ago, Samantha fondly remembered the lovely couple. “They were very pleasant and easy to talk to. We talked about so much including movies that we hadn’t seen. I labored with them all day until the call was made to deliver via C-section,” she said.

Fast forward to baby number two for the couple this past year, and their wish was granted as Samantha was blessed to care for them again.

About the DAISY Foundation

The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes. His family was awestruck by the care and compassion his nurses provided and one of the goals they set in creating a Foundation was to recognize extraordinary nurses everywhere who make an enormous difference in the lives of so many people by the super-human work they do every day.

Cinnamon rolls were a favorite of Patrick’s during his illness. The Barnes Family asks that whenever and wherever nurses smell that wonderful cinnamon aroma, they stop for a moment and think about how special they are.

To nominate a nurse for the DAISY Award, patients, visitors, nurses, physicians, or colleagues may complete and submit the form on our website.
